Major Development Proposed For Downtown Milford

The proposal includes adding apartments, commercial space and significantly more parking in downtown Milford.

May 17, 2021 - by Brian McCready, Milford Patch - MILFORD, CT -  The Planning and Zoning Board will consider a proposal by prominent developer, Robert Smith Jr., for a mixed-use development in downtown Milford at 44-64 River St.

If you're not familiar with that exact address, it was the former home of Franco's Pizza and others, and Franco's has since relocated to 11 Berwyn St. in late 2019.

The zoning meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday. The proposed application is to redevelop the property. Currently, there is an existing commercial building on site, which is broken up into several units. The existing building is proposed to be demolished, according to plans.

The existing parking lot has 75 spaces, and two-way access to Darina Place, River Street, Railroad Avenue and Lot 5.

Redevelopment plans consist of a 12,325 square-feet of commercial space on the ground level along with 50 apartments on the second and third floors. The units will be 40, 1-bedroom, 6, 2-bedroom, and 4 efficiency units.

Plans include redesigning entrances and exits for the property as well as an additional lower-level parking garage, which will have 120 spaces.

Construction is expected to take up to 18 months if the plans are approved.
